Each year, Mental Health America (formerly the National Mental Association) presents its highest honor, the Clifford W. Beers Award, to a mental health consumer whose service and leadership best emulate the example set by the Mental Health America founder in his efforts to improve conditions for, and attitudes toward, people with mental health conditions.  It has been presented annually since 1976.     Read more . . .

Who We Are

The Mental Health Association of Greater St. Louis (MHA) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental, charitable corporation founded in 1945 for the purpose of giving form and structure to the growing community concerns for the needs of those with mental illness. MHA is the only organization in the St. Louis community concerned with the entire spectrum of mental health and mental illness.

MHA, in conjunction with MHA of the Heartland (Greater Kansas City area) and NAMI/SouthwestNIMH Outreach Partnership Program MO (Springfield area) is a member of the National Institute of Mental Health's (NIMH) Outreach Partnership Program.

The mission of the Mental Health Association is that of representing the public’s interest in all matters relating to mental illness and mental health. This mission is translated into a set of clearly defined goals, which are stated at the top of this page.MHA is dedicated to using its limited resources in the most effective way to lead the local mental health movement, addressing the needs of the community at large on all issues of mental health and mental illness. (Continued after the MHA Spotlight.)

MHA Spotlight
Jewell Hickman, M.Ed, LPC

Meet Jewell Hickman, M.Ed., LPC

Ms. Hickman started her volunteer work with the Association in 2007 when she became a member of the Depression Education Committee (now known as the Community Awareness Team). Jewell helps plan activities and identify audiences for the Team’s educational events. She volunteers her time and clinical expertise at Depression screenings that the Team provides in the community. Jewell is also a great ambassador for the Team and the Association. She recently recruited a new Team member, and she often refers other individuals and professionals to the Association so they can take advantage of educational materials we provide to them for their work in the community. Jewell incorporates the educational mission of the Team and the Association in her other community and volunteer efforts. By using the Association’s educational materials, Jewell has helped raise awareness about mental health, mental illness, depression, and treatment options for audiences at senior events, faith-based organizations, health initiatives focused on minority populations, and women’s forums.

A heartfelt THANKS goes out to Jewell for her work on the Community Awareness Team and for carrying its message to other audiences she has the power to impact.

With over 300 community volunteers, the Association serves St. Louis city and county and St. Charles, Lincoln, Warren, Franklin and Jefferson counties.

It is estimated that over 270,000 St. Louis area citizens are in some way affected by mental illness. This includes almost 40,000 children. On the national level, almost 40,000,000 Americans are affected by the day-to-day struggle of mental illness.

In 1909, the National Mental Health Association (now called Mental Health America) began from the inspiration of Clifford Beers, who was a former mental patient. Since that time, the Association has grown to 340 chapters encompassing almost two million volunteers throughout the United States.

In summary, the Mental Health Association is the voice of those with mental illness to the public at large and the conscience of the public in providing quality care and treatment to persons with mental illness.
